Beyond APS: A Practical Guide to Planning Agents and Supply Chain Execution

Advanced planning and scheduling (APS) remains central to supply chain planning. It evaluates constraints, capacity, demand, and inventory, and helps planners compare feasible scenarios. Yet a recommended scenario does not automatically become an approved operational decision. Procurement may need to confirm a supplier, quality may need to clear a substitute, and operations may need to authorize a revised schedule. The next opportunity is to improve that path from planning insight to accountable execution.

A planning agent is best understood as a governed workflow assistant that can retrieve relevant evidence, coordinate permitted analyses, summarize trade-offs, and route decisions to the right people. It should not be assumed to have verified every record, solved every constraint, or earned authority to execute a transaction.
