Why Enterprises Need an Evidence Contract
A target account list usually looks deceptively complete. It may include companies, domains, regions, business categories, contacts and titles, yet still omit the very evidence needed for a responsible activation decision. Different teams use 'targeted,' 'verified,' 'engaged,' 'high intent' and 'qualified' as if the terms described the same thing. They do not. An audience evidence contract is a proposed operating artifact that makes the difference visible before campaign resources are committed. It states which facts are required, how they are validated, who may use them, which decisions they support, and which conclusions are prohibited.
The Contract has Four Layers
Layer A — Account Scope and Fit
Define the market, region, segment, solution use case, organization attributes and explicit exclusion rules. Include treatment of subsidiaries, parent companies and shared domains, since enterprise identity conflicts can distort account counts. Every included account should have a traceable fit rationale, even if some optional enrichment fields are missing. If an account's identity or segment is conflicted, quarantine it for review rather than silently choosing a preferred record.
Layer B — Contact and Role Validation
Identify permitted business-contact fields and the buying roles that matter to the particular solution. A title string is not always an accurate decision-role label. Preserve the original supplied title, the normalized persona mapping and the method used to validate or infer that mapping. Also record whether the business use and communication permission are established under the approved program scope. A valid email format or a reachable contact is not independently a qualified lead.
Layer C — Engagement Evidence
Separate the account-fit record from observed behaviors. A content request, event registration, verified attendance, specific inquiry, and first-party form submission are different facts. Record the captured date, asset, campaign, channel and available permission context for each. If a data provider supplies an intent category or score, treat that as a bounded signal with an identified source and method, not as proof of an impending purchase. Where cross-device identity or anonymous-to-known linkage cannot be verified, state the limitation.
Layer D — Acceptance and Decision Rights
Define which fields are mandatory for campaign delivery acceptance, which may be incomplete, which errors trigger replacement, and who adjudicates exceptions. Mark separately the criteria for Marketing-qualified, Sales-accepted and Sales-qualified progression. These should be supplied by the enterprise's authoritative lifecycle policy and CRM team; they are not automatically determined by a demand vendor's delivery status.
Example Field Specification
-
Account identity: legal or approved trading name, canonical domain, geography, sector, optional parent ID; source and verification date required.
-
Fit determination: eligibility criteria version, inclusion/exclusion reason, account tier if used, approving audience owner.
-
Persona: original role/title, normalized persona, relevance to the solution, validation method and uncertainty flag.
-
Interaction: channel, campaign code, content or event ID, observed action, recorded timestamp and source reference.
-
Privacy and permission: approved purpose, applicable consent or lawful-use basis, suppression status, retention owner and permitted follow-up channels.
-
Delivery decision: accepted, rejected, replacement requested or under review; reason code and responsible reviewer.
-
Handoff decision: approved CRM fields, owning queue or person, planned next action and the CRM lifecycle decision made after review.
How to Operationalize the Contract
Begin with one use case and a representative sample of records. Ask Marketing, Sales Operations, the privacy owner and the program delivery team to mark every field mandatory, conditional or optional. For each mandatory field, specify allowed sources, evidence age, validation rules, uncertainty handling and owner. Test both positive and negative examples: a clean target account, a duplicate, a mismatched persona, an outdated role, an excluded geography and a record with unclear permission status. Document the expected disposition for each. A field specification becomes useful only when sample records can be assessed against it consistently.
The Role of Intent Amplify
Buyer Intelligence can organize account and contact requirements in an agreed target audience specification. Managed Demand Generation can use the same evidence contract during activation and delivery reconciliation. Pipeline Activation can carry approved fields and engagement context to the designated Sales recipient. This is a proposed way an enterprise could structure its engagement with the three services; exact availability, validation sources, timing and control scope must be established in the program agreement. The contract does not confer extra permissions or certify a provider's data quality without test evidence.
Decision Test for an Executive Sponsor
The sponsor should be able to ask: 'Can we show why this account belongs here, why this persona matters, what event we observed, which data we verified, what we still do not know and who approved the next action?' If the evidence is missing, the remedy is not to invent a stronger intent label. It is to collect the missing information, narrow the decision or choose an educational follow-up rather than commercial escalation.
Six Criteria for a Useful Evidence Contract
-
Specific enough to score example records consistently across teams.
-
Clear about facts, inferences and unknown information.
-
Bound to authorized data sources, consent and approved use.
-
Explicit about duplication, conflicts, rejection and replacement.
-
Compatible with documented CRM ownership and stage definitions.
-
Versioned so the next campaign can explain changes to acceptance logic.
Suggested KPI Set
Measure sampled mandatory-field completeness, verified account-fit rate, acceptance versus replacement rate, proportion of persona mappings with documented provenance, records with valid source timestamps, and percentage of handoffs acknowledged by the assigned Sales owner. Counts must use agreed denominators and dates. The first observation establishes a baseline; it is not a benchmark for competitor performance or a promise of conversion uplift.
How Intent Amplify Connects the Three Capabilities
Buyer Intelligence establishes where to focus: target market, account criteria, buying roles, validation fields, and supported engagement context. Managed Demand Generation coordinates the agreed audience, channel, content or event program, recording delivery and acceptance evidence. Pipeline Activation packages validated account and contact context, source and interaction details, scoped qualification inputs, and the responsible Sales handoff. These are connected program responsibilities, not a guarantee that any individual record is an MQL, SQL, opportunity, pipeline contribution, or revenue result.
Implementation Safeguards
-
Define the eligible audience, permitted source use, consent requirements, retention boundaries, and excluded account segments before work begins.
-
Preserve the difference between observed engagement, inferred interest, marketing qualification, Sales qualification, and CRM-recorded commercial outcomes.
-
Agree the delivery acceptance and replacement criteria and name the owner responsible for resolving exceptions.
-
Check source, timestamp, campaign or content reference, and receiving CRM owner before activating any Sales follow-up.
